7th World Wide Conference of Osteoporosis Patient Societies

Naples, Italy, May 26-28, 2001

Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan

"I am delighted to be at this important gathering to help bring osteoporosis to the forefront of the international health agenda"

Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan at the IOF World Wide Conference of Osteoporosis Patient Societies

This year's IOF World Wide Conference of Osteoporosis Patient Societies (WWC) was held in Naples, Italy from May 26-28, 2001. With 150 participants from 43 countries, this 7th WWC was the largest international gathering ever of national osteoporosis society representatives. The success of the 2-day conference was in large part due to the excellent organisation on site by the Lega Italiana di Osteoporosi (LIOS) under the leadership of Dr. Maria-Luisa Bianchi.

One of the major highlights of the conference was the address given by IOF's patron, Queen Rania of Jordan. Her Majesty thanked the participants for their dedication to this important cause and confirmed her own commitment to the fight against osteoporosis worldwide. Remaining for the plenary session, the Queen mingled briefly with the participants and had photographs taken with many of those who were eager to greet her personally.

"Women should take responsibility for their own health" was the message from famous Mexican actress and singer, Angelica Maria Hartman, who addressed the audience in the opening plenary session. As the patron of the Mexican Committee for the Study of Osteoporosis (COMOP), Angelica Maria stressed her support for osteoporosis prevention and the work of both COMOP and IOF.

Other high-profile speakers included On. Marcello Taglialatela, a Member of the Italian Parliament, and Dr. Elvira Reale, who spoke on behalf of Italy's Director of Social Policies, Department of Equal Opportunities.

For further information about the plenary sessions, see the meeting programme (PDF file, 4.8 MB). Notes and summaries of the workshops and highlights of the plenary and open mike presentations will be posted soon.
