A Call to Osteoporosis Action: European Union Policy Project

In 2002, the IOF received funding from the European Community to provide an updated audit report of osteoporosis policy developments in the Member States and to publish a practical plan outlining the next policy steps required to implement the EC recommendations of 1998

Action Plan

This practical plan, Osteoporosis in the European Community: Action Plan, was presented on November 12, 2003 at the European Parliament in Brussels by the European Union Osteoporosis Consultation Panel.

The European Union Osteoporosis Consultation Panel and EU Policy Project

The European Union Osteoporosis Consultation Panel brings together policy makers from the European Union and its member states, and osteoporosis experts, to form a consultation panel to work on practical, cost effective strategies to improve access to diagnosis and proven therapies before the first fracture. See list of EU Osteoporosis Consultation Panel Members

The initial 18-month project, a key building block in implementing recommendations outlined in the EC 1998 Report on Osteoporosis in the European Community - Action for Prevention and the subsequent "Call to Action" by the EP Osteoporosis Interest Group, has been continued and is making strides in encouraging policy officials to focus attention on osteoporosis at the EU and national levels.

In 2004 IOF and the EU Osteoporosis Consultation Panel submitted to the European Commission a publication entitled "Osteoporosis in the European Union: Member States Policy Progress Report, February 2004", which updated the findings of the Leiden meetings on a country-by-country basis as well as a summary report "Osteoporosis in the European Union: Overview and Next Steps", which outlines the entire EU Policy Project and the key next steps for the European Commission.
