Report on the 3rd European Congress on Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis
Barcelona, Spain, November 6-9, 2002

The Third European Congress on Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ECCEO 3) took place in Barcelona, Spain from 6 to 9 November 2002, organised by the World Heath Collaborating Center on Public Health Aspects of Rheumatic Diseases, under the auspices of the International Osteoporosis Foundation.

This meeting was a great success with more than 2200 delegates. It has now become the major European event in the field of Osteoporosis, both in terms of the number of delegates attending the sessions and in the number of clinical results shown for the first time.

Congress audience

Notwithstanding, ECCEO is keeping its particular focus on social and economic aspects of rheumatic diseases, which makes this meeting particularly attractive, for researchers, clinicians, but also for health policy makers and members of regulatory authorities. During ECCEO 3, more than 200 presentations were offered to the participants and the abstracts were available as a supplement to Osteoporosis International.

Sponsored satellite symposiums were also of the highest scientific quality and offered the audience the possibility of discussing not only the efficacy but also the efficiency of treatments for osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.

A task force including representatives of the International Osteoporosis Foundation and members of the Regional Office of the World Health Organisation, In Copenhagen, decided to investigate the best ways to implement guidelines for the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis, at national level.

ECCEO is now unanimously considered as the reference European Congress for those scientists willing to have an overall perception of the latest scientific results in the field of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis, in a cost-conscious and social perspective.

Speeches were given at the opening session of the congress by Mel Read, MEP UK , Chair of the European Parliament Osteoporosis Interest Group. Mrs. Read also spoke at the satellite symposium The Osteoporosis Paradox – The Neglected Disease: Have we made progress?
