WOD 2005 media campaign with emphasis on exercise for healthy bones

World Osteoporosis Day and its theme of ‘Move it or Lose it’ was highlighted extensively in the Belgian press. Patron of the Belgian World Osteoporosis Day was Sabine Appelmans, former world class tennis player. In an interview, Appelmans stressed the benefits of exercise saying,“Anyone can walk: just yesterday I went walking with my 80 year-old neighbour…just don’t over do it, remember to breathe correctly and avoid brusque movements,” she added.

Several interviews by IOF General Secretary Prof. Jean-Yves Reginster of the Belgian Bone Club and Dr. Christiane Pouliart of the Belgian Association for Osteoporosis Patients appeared on radio and major news stations in all parts of the country.

Articles also appeared in the French, Flemish and German press and on health-related websites. In Belgium it is estimated that some 600,000 women are affected by osteoporosis in Belgium.

Annual Clinical Update Symposium and Densitometry Course

The Belgian Bone Club holds a clinical update symposium every year. This year the focus in on osteoporosis in males, to be held on Saturday January 29 in Gent, Belgium.

Planning is underway for a second densitometry course, possibly to be held in Avril 2006.

Press conference and talk show to highlight the problem of osteoporosis in males

The Belgian Bone Club, in collaboration with the Belgian Patient society of Osteoporosis (BVO), is planning a press conference. Speakers will be Prof.
S. Boonen, president of BBC, and Prof. J.M.Kaufman, treasurer.

On Friday the 23rd of October Prof. Jean-Yves Reginster will appear on a major television network, RTL+, for a 15 minute talk show on osteoporosis in males.
