Turkish Joint Diseases Foundation
1st Congress on Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis
Turkish Joint Diseases Foundation organized a congress on osteoporosis and osteoarthritis in Antalya, Turkey. The aim of the meeting was to increase the awareness and the knowledge of the orthopaedic surgeons on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis. With a multidisciplinary approach, the incidence, the prevalance, and the burden of this silent epidemic were disscussed. Professors Olof Johnell, MD and Steven Boonen were guest speakers. Prof. Johnell gave several lectures and participated in panel discussions. Professors Rizzoli and Zacher were not able to attend meeting (they thought it might be risky due to Iraq conflict). Professors Johnell and Atik replaced them).
The speakers tried to answer the following questions
*What is osteoporosis?
*Why should the orthopedic surgeon be concerned?
*How should the patients with osteoporotic fractures be evaluated?
*Who to treat?
*How to treat?
The medical treatment of osteoarthritis was also discussed in this meeting. The major take home message was "you are first physician and then surgeon". The orthopaedic surgeons were told that most of patients with osteoarthritis can be managed with conservative measures.
The economical aspects were also disscussed during the congress.
