Thai Osteoporosis Foundation - Actively working to fight osteoporosis since 2002

Thai Osteoporosis Foundation under Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana KromLuang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra was established in 2002 in response to community demand for information about Osteoporosis.

The TOPF is the nation’s leading voluntary organization solely dedicated to osteoporosis and bone health.

TOPF missions are

1.Establish osteoporosis as a major health issue
2.Increase awareness of Osteoporosis
3.Improve prevention & management strategies
4.Increase GP & other health professionals understanding of Osteoporosis
5.Establish Osteoporosis knowledge via IT technology
6.Incorporate with other public organization in health promotion

Three years since its inception, TOPF has developed its activities according to its mission as follows;


I Establish Osteoporosis as a major health issue in conjunction with other societies

1.Lecture to the public at Anoma Swiss Hotel in 2002.
2.Organized the “Help Thai Women Fight Against Osteoporosis” at The Mall Department Store, by having exhibition on Osteoporosis in 2002.
3.In cooperation with New Zealand Milk Products, TOPF gave lecture on Osteoporosis at the Big C Mall twenty branch around the country.
4.Co-organized with Bone and Joint Decade Foundation (Thailand) giving lecture on “Common Bone and Joint Disease”.
5.Interviewed by television on channel 3, cable TV UBC channel 12, MCOT channel 9 on osteoporosis.
6.Invited to give presentation to the Lumpini Rotary, China town Rotary.
7. The past president of TOPF on TV channel 3, campiagn for world osteoporosis day in Thailand.
8.Set up an exhibition on osteoporosis at Ministry of Health Office.
9.Press release to promote drinking milk in conjunction with the ‘milk promoting committee’ by the Ministry of Forestry.
10.Affiliated with the Bone and Joint Decade, hosted the annual patient meeting on Oct 3, 2004.
11.Hosted the Royal Orthopaedic Association Annual Meeting during Oct 13-17, 2004.


II Printing Materials:

1. “Invest in your bones" (report on youth bone health) was published in Thai language, with 20,000 copies, we distributed to many primary and secondary schools in Bangkok.
2.With the co-operation with Somdet Phra Srinagarindra Boromarajajonani, Her Royal Highness The Princess Mother Medical Foundation and RS. Promotion (Music Company) Launch poster campaign on osteoporosis 7000 copies was distributed throughout the country.


III Campaign launched

1.Launched slogan contest on Osteoporosis Day 2002 at Pattaya beach.
2.Associated with Phayathai Royal Palace’ conservative group organized musical night at the Palace 2003.
3.Set up questions and answers for TV game shows regarding osteoporosis knowledge.
4.Walk rally with the bone and joint decade foundation Her Royal Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn gave opening speech and participated in this walk rally.
5.Set up a committee for writing osteoporosis treatment guideline which was approved by consensus meeting of Thai doctors in various subspecialties.
6.First annual meeting of Thai Osteoporosis Foundation on 15-16 September 2003.
7.Gave press conference with National Health Foundation on osteoporosis’ national policy.
8.World osteoporosis day 2003 campaign : giving public meeting and press conference on Oct 16, 2003.
9.First organized Thailand patient’s society on osteoporosis “Osteoporosis Society”.
10.Question and Answer on osteoporosis at National Channel TV.
11.Gave an interview “Drinking milk is good, isn’t it?” on radio 96.5MHz in August, 2004.


IV Promote Research on Osteoporosis

1.Attended Research Forum on osteoporosis held by National Health Foundation on June 23, 2003.
2.Participated with Asia Pacific Osteoporosis Foundation research project on the prevalence of vertebral fracture in asian women.


V Information technology

1.Thai osteoporosis Foundation website http://www.thaiosteoporosis.org has been setup since September, 2003.


VI International co-operation

1.Thai Osteoporosis Foundation has been approved to be an affiliate member of IOF and member of Asia Pacific Osteoporosis 2003.
2.Past president and past secretary had attended the Patient Society Meeting and National Society Meeting at Lisbon Portugal.
3.In conjunction with Asian Pacific Osteoporosis Foundation, the second ARCOS meeting was held on Jan 16-18, 2003 in Hong Kong.
4. Will host the IOF World Wide Congress on Osteoporosis in Bangkok in September 2005


VII Fund Raising

1.Unrestricted grants to the Thai Osteoporosis Foundation were supported by five pharmaceutical companies : MSD, Aventis, Novartis, Eli Lilly, Eisai.
