World Osteoporosis Day 2004 Activities
World Osteoporosis Day activities were organized by the Osteoporosis Patient Society of Turkey and the Turkish Osteoporosis Society in Silivri, a small town of 30,000 people about 70 km outside of Ýstanbul. The mayor of Silivri welcomed participants to the dayís activities, which included:
1- Osteodensitometric Evaluation
2- Concert by a popular group 1.5 hours
3- Conference 1.5 hours
4- Interactive session 2.5 hours
5- Short Play by an Actress Dilek Türker
6- Ceramic Exhibition by Lerzan Öke
7- Media Session
The one-minute risk test was distributed and osteodensitometric evaluations were carried out in those at risk and women over 65 years of age. About 150 people were tested.
Persons found to have osteopenia or osteoporosis received expert advice.
The conference, which drew 750 people, was open to the public. Four Executive Committee Members of the two societies, also working at the Osteoporosis Centers of three Universities in Ýstanbul, were the speakers. There was an interactive discussion.
in which participants were invited to ask questions. Advice was given, especially how to prevent the disease, and stressing the importance of sunshine and dairy products.
Participants were treated to a short play performed by famous Turkish actress Dilek Türker and a ceramic exhibition by well-known ceramic artist Lerzan Öke (who is also member of the Osteoporosis Patientís Society).
