World Osteoporosis Day exhibition draws crowds

The Scientific Council for Osteoporosis and Skeletal Disease organized an exhibition "Preventing Osteoporosis" on the 19th, 20th and 21st of October to coincide with World Osteoporosis Day.

The exhibition posters, written in both Arabic and English, were sent to all embassies and cultural centres as well as to headmasters of schools to encourage "field trips" to the exhibition. Arabic, English and French speaking doctors were present at the exhibition at all times to answer questions.

The three-day exhibition was well attended by young and old.

In addition, greetings cards for World Osteoporosis Day were sent to many doctors, hospitals, physiotherapists and pharmacies.

The Council will be issuing another brochure to follow on from the one printed in 2004. It will have information about osteoporosis in men, fractures and exercise. The Council thanks Aventis and Novartis who have provided an educational grant to help with the production of the brochures.

The exhibition will be extended beyond Damascus with the aim of showing it around the country, including plans to show it in Aleppo, Latakia and Homs during 2006.

The WOD activities follow an active year in which representatives of the Council attended meetings in Amman, Jordan and Beirut. There has been an increasing focus on professional education, with talks on the lastest ideas and treatments in osteoporosis given to health professionals in the field of orthopaedics, rheumatology, endocrinology and gynaecology.
