Belgian Bone Club

WOD 2005 media campaign with emphasis on exercise for healthy bones

World Osteoporosis Day and its theme of ‘Move it or Lose it’ was highlighted extensively in the Belgian press. Patron of the Belgian World Osteoporosis Day was Sabine Appelmans, former world class tennis player. In an interview, Appelmans stressed the benefits of exercise saying,“Anyone can walk: just yesterday I went walking with my 80 year-old neighbour…just don’t over do it, remember to breathe correctly and avoid brusque movements,” she added.

Several interviews by IOF General Secretary Prof. Jean-Yves Reginster of the Belgian Bone Club and Dr. Christiane Pouliart of the Belgian Association for Osteoporosis Patients appeared on radio and major news stations in all parts of the country.

Articles also appeared in the French, Flemish and German press and on health-related websites. In Belgium it is estimated that some 600,000 women are affected by osteoporosis in Belgium.
