The first IOF-METCOP was held at the Grand Hills Village in the mountain resort of Brumana, Lebanon, from 27th-29th May. This training course is intended to be an annual event, affording participants from the Middle East and North Africa the opportunity to follow, within the area, a comprehensive course giving all the latest information on osteoporosis while also conferring 20 CME credits awarded by Balamand University, Lebanon.

‘I would like you to consider this as a family gathering’, were Prof. Ghassan Maalouf’s words at the opening and, certainly, the atmosphere amongst the 150 or so participants was relaxed and informal and a fair quantity of the data was of particular significance to the region. Dr. Camille Nassar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Balamand University, also welcomed the participants, expressing his pleasure at the establishment of the course.
An impressive assembly of international speakers presented the latest information on every aspect of osteoporosis. Prof. Jean-Philippe Bonjour presided as Course Leader and also as a member of the Teaching Faculty, along with Profs. Pierre Delmas, David Ergun, Serge Ferrari, David Hosking, Olof Johnell and Jean-Marc Kaufman. Training sessions were presented by Profs. David Ergun and Jef Van Dam and Linda Weynand (all of General Electric Lunar) and Profs. Leith Zakraoui and Ghassan Maalouf.
In summing up, Prof. Maalouf stressed the vital need to set up fracture data banks in every country of the region and also recommended that more studies should be carried out regarding vitamin D deficiency, this being a subject of particular relevance to countries of the region. He also offered special thanks to Prof. Delmas, whose initiation of the annual Advanced Training Course in Lyon 14 years ago inspired the concept of the IOF-METCOP.

First Regional Course on Hip Diseases and Surgery (SGH-Hip Course)
The first regional training course on hip diseases and surgery (SGH-Hip Course) took place at the St. George’s Hospital, Beirut, on the 24-25th June. The course has been planned as an annual event covering the latest data in the field of pathophysiiology, epidemiology, diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of various hip diseases.
Profs. Miguel Cabanela (USA) and Jean Puget (Fr.) acted as International Coordinators and offered presentations, along with the following international faculty members: Profs. Robert Trousdale (USA), Frederic Laude (Fr.), Jean-Yves Lazennec (Fr.), Vincent Minville (Fr.), Luca Merega (It.) and Mitchell Sheinkop (USA). The Regional Coordinator was Dr. Alexander Nehme.
The course was opened by Prof. Ghassan Maalouf, Head of the Orthopedics Dept. of St. George’s Hospital and Dr. Camille Nassar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Balamand, Lebanon.
This first course attracted around 140 medical professionals and members of the pharmaceutical industry from around the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey, Cyprus and Pakistan, and attendants received CME credits awarded by the Faculty of Medicine of the Lebanese University of Balamand.
