Abstract Submission Guidelines

General Information

Abstracts must be submitted online. No hardcopy submissions will be considered.

All abstracts must be submitted in English.

The contact information defined with your user account must be that of the Presenting Author of an abstract and no one else. All correspondence (primarily by e-mail) will be sent to the Presenting Author.

You should avoid errors and misspellings. The abstract submission system will allow you to change previously submitted abstracts up to the submission deadline.

Data must not have been previously presented nor published prior to the IOF World Congress on Osteoporosis in Rio de Janeiro, May 14-18, 2004.

To withdraw an abstract, written notification must be sent by mail to the IOF Congress Secretariat.

Guidelines for Abstract Text

350 words is the maximum length for an abstract text (excluding title, keywords, authors and affiliations). If you are including a table or a figure, this limit is reduced to 300 words.

The abstract text should be structured as follows:

  • Aims
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Conclusions

Only use line breaks (by pressing the "Return/Enter" button) for paragraphs. Within a paragraph, the text will wrap automatically at the end of the form field. For the same reason, do not use hyphens at the end of a line.

Scientific, Greek and other special characters have to be spelt out in words, using codes that are listed on the abstract submission form. The listing includes codes for font formatting like bold and italic.

Guidelines for Abstract Figures

An abstract may contain one figure or one table. They will be placed at the end of the abstract text. If you want to use a caption, there is a corresponding form field.

Both figures and tables can be imported on the abstract submission form.

Figures must adhere to the following specifications:

  • File formats for bitmap images (e.g. scans): TIFF (preferred), JPEG, GIF
  • File formats for vector graphics (e.g. charts): EPS (preferred), PDF, Word, Excel, Powerpoint
  • Width: 85 mm
  • Resolution (bitmap images): 300 dpi
  • Maximum file size: 1 MB
  • Figure files can be submitted ZIP-compressed, which may dramatically reduce file size and therefore upload times. (There are many compression tools for PC and Mac.)

Figures must be of good enough quality from which to print.

Tables have to be submitted as Word documents.

Text within figures (e.g. axes labels of charts) must be large enough to be read.
